Firefighter

The Pulaski County Fire and Rescue Department is accepting applications for a Full-Time Firefighter position. This role involves performing firefighting and rescue functions in coordination with various County and Town Departments and personnel. The successful candidate will respond to calls for service, perform duties as assigned, and adhere to Department policies within the scope of their training, qualifications, and capabilities. Responsibilities include activities to protect and preserve life and property from fire and other potentially hazardous situations, along with related tasks as assigned. The position also involves fire suppression, rescue operations, fire prevention, community education, support activities, and other duties as directed. Additionally, the Firefighter will conduct scheduled activities such as maintenance, cleaning, testing, and upkeep of apparatus and equipment. The role may also require providing support to other agencies and departments in accordance with policy and mutual aid agreements. This position reports to Fire-Rescue Command Staff.

Work hours are as scheduled, including holidays and weekends. The salary scale for this position is $46,817 - $70,338 and is commensurate upon education and experience.

Educational Requirements: Applicant must possess a VDFP Firefighter I Certification, with Firefighter II certification strongly preferred. Additionally, candidates should have Haz-Mat Operations certification (VDFP or approved equivalent), Extrication Technician certification (VDFP or approved equivalent), and a VDFP-approved EVOC Class III Certification. Candidates must also complete any other certifications or training required by Department policy for fireground operations and successfully finish the precepting process, along with any additional training necessary to maintain authorization for their assigned roles. Relevant experience in firefighting, pump operations, EMS, and other emergency services is highly desirable. Dual role Fire and Rescue personnel must be certified as an EMT or higher by the Virginia Office of EMS and maintain this certification throughout employment unless otherwise authorized by the Director.

Randolph Park Seasonal Positions
  • Lifeguard

    This position is responsible for ensuring patrons adhere to all rules and regulations of the water park facility while providing necessary lifesaving duties of CPR and first aid in emergency situations. Work hours are up to Forty (40) hours per week during the pool season of May through early September. Some overtime and evening work may be required. Applicant must be enrolled in school, be at least 15 years of age and certified in first aid, CPR and lifeguarding, employer provides certifications upon hire. Previous experience in an aquatic setting is preferred. The starting pay for this position is $16 per hour and is commensurate upon education and experience.

  • Pool Attendant

    This position is responsible for greeting patrons, collecting pool entry fees, counting fees, issuing arm bands, maintaining cleanliness of the facility and handling all other general patron inquiries. Work hours are up to Forty (40) hours/week during the pool season of May through early September. Some overtime and evening work may be required. Applicant must be at least 15 years of age and enrolled in high school. Previous experience working with the public is preferred. The starting pay for this position is $14 and is commensurate upon education and experience.

  • Summer Camp Counselor

    This position is responsible for providing indoor and outdoor activities for a wide age range of children. The Randolph Park camp occurs five days per week, ten hours per day during the summer. Counselors must be highly qualified to supervise large groups of children ensuring campers safety, conducting activities, collecting camp fees, frequent cleaning, attending to minor and major injuries and parental inquiries. This position supervises other staff depending on assigned duties. Work hours are up to Forty (40) hours per week for approximately ten weeks. Some overtime and evening work may be required. Current enrollment in college or college graduate applicants are preferred, minimum educational requirement is current enrollment in high-school. Previous related experience working with children is preferred. First Aid and CPR is preferred and may be required based on level of responsibility. The starting pay for this position is $15 per hour and is commensurate upon education and experience.

  • Aquatics Supervisor

    This position is responsible for managing the Randolph Park outdoor pool, including pool chemistry, equipment and maintenance, and the training and supervision of lifeguards, pool attendants, and other ancillary staff. The Aquatics Supervisor will also ensure that all employees and patrons comply with park rules and regulations, as well as oversee the safety and security of the entire aquatics facility. This position supervises all aquatics staff. Work hours are up to forty (40) hours per week during the pool season from May through early September, with some overtime and evening work may be required. Required certifications include Lifeguard Certification, First Aid, and CPR. A Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification is preferred but can be provided by the employer upon hire. Previous aquatic facility experience is also preferred. Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and be at least 18 years of age. The starting pay is $18 per hour and is commensurate with education and experience.

Administrative Assistant - Fire & Rescue

Pulaski County Fire and Rescue is seeking to fill a full-time Administrative Assistant position. This position is responsible for providing confidential support to leadership, managing sensitive records and data, and overseeing financial functions such as budgeting and purchasing. Additionally, they coordinate logistics for operations and events to ensure smooth and efficient execution, and assist with departmental activities like scheduling and training. Serving as a vital link between command staff, personnel, and the public, they ensure daily operations run smoothly and that safety protocols are followed. E-911 Telecommunicator

Pulaski County Public Safety is seeking to fill full-time E-911 Telecommunicator positions. This role involves handling emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching first responders, operating communication systems, and maintaining records. The position reports to the Public Safety Telecommunicator Shift Supervisor.

Work hours are determined by the shift supervisor. Applicants must be able to work any shift, including shift rotations, weekends, and holidays, and be available to work overtime as needed to meet operational requirements. “On Call” days are also required each month. This is an essential position requiring employees to work during inclement weather and be available for immediate recall during emergencies. The salary range for this position is $42,630 – $68,378, and compensation is commensurate with education and experience.

Youth Services Assistant

The Pulaski County Library is seeking to fill a part-time Youth Services Assistant position. The primary duties of this role include providing library services to preschoolers, school-aged children, and young adults (teens). Responsibilities may include facilitating preschool story times, organizing programs and activities for youth, and coordinating the Summer Reading Program. The Youth Services Assistant will work closely with the Youth Services Librarian to deliver services to the community's youth and will also be responsible for some library circulation duties. This position reports to the Youth Services Coordinator.

Work hours are approximately 25 hours per week, typically Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Some evening work and occasional overnight travel may be required. The hourly rate for this position ranges from $16 to $21, commensurate with education and experience.

Training Officer - Fire & Rescue

The Pulaski County Fire & Rescue Department is seeking to fill a full-time Training Officer position. The anticipated hire date of this position is January 2nd or after. This position develops, implements and maintains all training programs for staff and volunteers, assists with training records management, purchases and maintains training equipment, coordinates all activities associated with the department’s training center, oversees training and certification of new personnel, existing personnel and upon changes in certification levels, coordinates and conducts initial courses and continuing education programs as needed to meet agency and community needs, supports any fire training initiatives at Pulaski County High School or New River Community College. The Training Officer may be asked to assist the Fire Chief with day to day operations of the department. This may include budgeting for training, field operations and response, as well as other administrative work as assigned. This positon reports to the Fire Chief.

Work hours are Monday through Friday office hours, with some evening and weekend work required. Some overtime and overnight travel may be necessary. The salary scale for this position is $55,000 – $78,900 and is commensurate with education and experience.

Applicant must possess a high school diploma or GED. A degree in the Fire Services Field and/or business management is preferred. Fire Instructor II, Fire Officer I, Firefighter II, EVOC III, Hazardous Materials – Operations, FEMA-NIMS Certifications (ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-300, ICS-700, ICS-800, Certification by the Virginia Office of EMS, as an EMT-B or higher, extensive experience developing and conducting training and certification programs, experience working with local and regional training entities, experience in HR matters and standard practices, knowledge of Public Sector budgeting, procurement, and purchasing, and the ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with subordinates, peers, government officials, volunteer fire departments, and the general public.

Assistant Chief of EMS Operations

The Pulaski County Public Safety Department is seeking to fill a full-time Assistant Chief of EMS - Operations (AC 9-1) position. As a key member of the Pulaski County Public Safety Department, the Assistant Chief of EMS plays a critical role in overseeing the daily operations of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) department. This position supervises Field Captains, Lieutenants, Field staff manages agency operations and reports to the Chief of EMS.

Important Note: Please be advised that the anticipated start date for this position is January 1, 2026.

Work hours are primarily weekdays, but occasionally include nights, weekends, holidays, and Special Events. The starting salary for this position is $80,000+ and is commensurate upon education and experience.

Educational Requirements: The ideal candidate will possess a strong educational and experiential background, including certification as a paramedic by the Virginia Office of EMS and certification in ICS 100, 200, 300, 700, and 800. Current or previous experience as a Virginia Education Coordinator is preferred, as is current or previous instructor certifications in EMS courses. A minimum of an Associate's degree in a related field or extensive comparable experience is required, with a Bachelor's degree preferred. Additionally, a minimum of eight (8) years of supervisory experience is required, with grant writing experience being a desirable asset. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and other applications, is also required.
